Beginning piano lessons for children start with teaching them the relationship between the keyboard, their fingers, and the written music. This starts with note recognition of the white keys on the piano. Next, students read pitches from the staff and apply those to the keyboard. The first lessons may be broken up into parts depending on the age and initial understanding of the child. It is important not to overwhelm a student but that they have ahaa moments at their own pace and have fun.

Piano teacher with 20 plus years playing the piano. Bachelor degrees in English and psychology with secondary education certification. For the last seven years I was a live-in nanny for a seven-year-old boy and assisted him in learning to play the piano. I currently teach piano at the Glendale Recreation Center. I have created several easy to understand piano theory books pertaining to scales and chord formation for beginning piano students. I love working with children and understand their differing levels of comprehension based on age and interest and adjust my teaching methods accordingly.
